Hunt Slonem
Witness

Dates: October 29 – November 28, 1998
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 29, 5 – 7pm

Marcel Sitcoske Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by artist Hunt Slonem. The exhibition opens Thursday, October 29.
The work of New York based artist Hunt Slonem borrows heavily from his own life, focusing on the caged bird, of which there are quite a number in his studio. He uses this subject as both a formal tool and a way to deal with the notions of freedom and imprisonment.

Painting wet on wet, he draws grids over his thickly painted surfaces, at once obscuring and flattening the image, and anchoring it into the physical plane of the painting. This superficial grid references a myriad of sources from Western Art, from ancient frescoes to Renaissance perspective to Cubism and beyond. The birds that we see in these cages are furthermore subjects through whom we can examine a more general sense of freedom denied and the yearning for liberation.
